La Brea coyote (Canis latrans) skull (cast from Valley Anatomical Preparations, Canoga Park, CA). The original specimen is in the collections of the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum.

The real Canis latrans fossils were collected at the Rancho La Brea “Tar Pits” in Los Angeles. Below are two souvenir postcards from the George C. Page Museum of La Brea Discoveries in LA, showing excavations being conducted at La Brea in 1913, and more recent preparatory work being done inside the museum Paleontology Laboratory .
