The Japanese motion picture company Toie Animation, Ltd.’s response to Toho Company, Ltd.’s immensely popular Godzilla franchise was Gamera, the giant prehistoric flying turtle. Like Godzilla, the chelonian kaiju spawned a long-running series of movies, many (not all) of which were aimed directly at children, plus myriad collectible items, some of them shown here. Also like his Toho rival, Gamer (sometimes spelled Gammera) fought numerous equally fantastic creatures, some of them prehistoric.
