“Uncle Beasley”

Bank from the Smithsonian Instiutution in the image of  “Uncle Beasely,” the Jonas Studios Triceratops that appeared in The Enormous Egg TV special in the 1960s.

The Enormous Egg was about a living Triceratops that makes a journey to the Smithsonian, ridden by a young human friend. The dinosaur originally appeared at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and was equipped with a moving neck. This scene from the show (below) appeared in a preview article published in TV Guide magazine. The black and white photograph (below) shows the Triceratops figure outside the Jonas Studios in Churchtown, New York, awaiting transport to the New York fairgrounds.

The actual figure (head no longer operating) used in the TV special was later exhibited outside the Institution’s National Museum of Natural History (see postcard below).
